Mindfulness

Sea Change Preparatory provides a transformative education, based on a proven specialized academic program, which inspires and motivates students in a small, mindful environment where individual skills, abilities and gifts are nurtured and rewarded.

Mindfulness at Sea Change is not some mystic esoteric practice. The program utilizes well-recognized techniques which improve attention, focus, concentration, self-control and empathy as well as reduce stress, and which have been proven to work in both the business and the educational environments. Considerable research reported by such varied sources as the Harvard Medical and Business schools as well as popular press (such as Time Magazine) have verified the benefits of basic mindfulness practices. In the last several years, companies such as Google, Goldman Sachs, Intel, Aetna, General Mills and Adobe have adopted mindfulness programs utilizing the same basic approach as Sea Change and have reported these same benefits.

Many studies likewise show the benefits of mindfulness specifically in education. (see http://www.mindfulschools.org/about-mindfulness/research/). The Sea Change program incorporates elements of the Mindful School’s curriculum, which has been utilized in schools for over a decade. Sea Change teachers and staff are certified instructors by Mindful Schools. The chart below shows the benefits of that curriculum used in a public school population in Oakland in a controlled study with just 30 minutes of mindfulness techniques per week—far less than what the Sea Change curriculum provides:

Sea Change’s mindfulness program is designed to teach students to pay attention to their experience in a way which allows them to act in a thoughtful, compassionate manner rather than react thoughtlessly, out of unskillful habits. This is a skill that can be taught—and Sea Change teachers and staff are trained in how to teach it. The program includes at least three 20 minute basic mindfulness meditation instruction sessions per week, yoga instruction and a life management skills seminar which incorporates social and emotional learning utilizing mindfulness, all in a team oriented compassionate environment. Our own experience is consistent with the research shown above—mindfulness training increases the ability of students to pay attention, to focus on positive goals and to be caring and kind to those around them.

Our mindfulness program is core to transforming the intellectual, social and emotional lives of our students. Integrated with our advanced personal learning approach and innovative world class swim program, the overall program at Sea Change enables our students (and families) to avoid so many of the time and energy sucking traps out there today—the internet, video games, shopping for entertainment and other unskillful diversions. Our approach redirects the focus on the things that really matter in life—positive values, their peers, their community and their studies. Taken together, our program produces impressive results in preparing our students not only to get into college, but to thrive there and in their lives beyond.
